Weather

This is a combination of two photos shown below. One exposed for the chapel, one exposed for the lightning.

  1. very cool! It almost looks like something out of a haunted house book or movie. How did you get the lightning in a shot? any special tricks?

  2. Long exposures (as you can see, 20 seconds), counting, and some luck I guess.

    It was just a lightning storm, no rain. So I set up on the tripod, counted in between strikes, and tried to time it so that my shutter was open when they struck.

    I probably took 100 or so photos @ 20 seconds each which was about 1/2 hour, and I was lucky that the lightning lasted that long and was striking behind the chapel low in the sky.

    The shot of the chapel with the lights on was taken on a completely different night. I had to wait until there was an evening event inside so that the stained glass would be lit up.

  3. I love it! That's always a tricky one! Always enjoy those lighting pictures. They take more work than most realize, but definitely worth results like yours! Never had much luck, myself. plb
