Long exposures (as you can see, 20 seconds), counting, and some luck I guess.
It was just a lightning storm, no rain. So I set up on the tripod, counted in between strikes, and tried to time it so that my shutter was open when they struck.
I probably took 100 or so photos @ 20 seconds each which was about 1/2 hour, and I was lucky that the lightning lasted that long and was striking behind the chapel low in the sky.
The shot of the chapel with the lights on was taken on a completely different night. I had to wait until there was an evening event inside so that the stained glass would be lit up.
I love it! That's always a tricky one! Always enjoy those lighting pictures. They take more work than most realize, but definitely worth results like yours! Never had much luck, myself. plb
very cool! It almost looks like something out of a haunted house book or movie. How did you get the lightning in a shot? any special tricks?
